There were two incredibly interesting primary sources found on this subject that do an exceptional job of describing the cattle industry in Arizona especially southern Arizona, as well as describing the impact the industry had on the region in terms of local culture and the immigration of Anglos from the east that it enc
ouraged by prosperity. In an article found in the Arizona weekly the cattle industry was presented more like a classified add than a news article. Published in the late nineteenth century.

Weekly Citizen in Tucson, Pima County Arizona June 14th 1890. the article was written in the same time period the governor’s report was written in the years leading up to Arizona statehood and offers, just as Colin Cameron’s excerpt, several clues into the cattle industry of Arizona. The article is extremely interesting in the types of historical clues it offers as well as the way the author presents them.

The article is extremely interesting in the types of historical clues it offers as well as the way the author presents them.
First the clues the article offers about the Arizona cattle industry. The article leads the reader to believe that the cattle industry in Arizona is not as large or expansive as in some states. It begins by stating that comparatively few have been engaged in the cattle business, which is in contrast to the Cameron excerpt written just a year later. However, the article describes the potential for growth and this is the truly interesting thing about this article. The article along with clues into Arizona’s cattle business it also gives clues into the cattle industry across the country.
The article describes the cattle industry in places like Nevada and Northern California as substandard to what Arizona has to offer in the way of vast natural resources, profitability and beef quality. “There is no feeding of stock during the winter months, or loss of cattle due to inclemency of weather, as instance the disaster and northern California.” The article also describes the stock arising boom that happened in Wyoming, which the article says was thought to be a wasteland, and argues the same could happen for the state of Arizona. It goes on to say that only recently have stock raisers seen this same opportunity in Arizona almost daring people to come and invest their business in the cattle industry of Arizona.
