Primeria Alta

Father Kino was known for his great mapping skills and one of his greatest and most known accomplishments is accurately mapping the Pimeria Alta. The Pimeria Alta encompassed parts of what are today southern Arizona in the United States and the northern Sonora in Mexico. His map, published in 1705 was the first of Pimeria based on actual exploration. Pimeria Alta gets its name from the natives that were living on the area at the time. The Pima and the closely related O'odham (Papago) indigenous peoples of the Sonoran desert. This was the site of the Spanish missions of the 17th century established by Father Kino.
