The Tohono O’odham culture in
southern Arizona was unique to the desert and the Papago Indians that inhabited
the land. The Papago Indians were religious people, and had religious ceremonies
to encourage growth, promote rain, and hunting. Father Kino arrived in Arizona
in 1687, and began the San Xavier del Bac mission. Father Kino’s knowledge of
agriculture and religion allowed the Papago to increase their food production
and trade with surrounding tribes.
