San Xavier del Bac held the prime location of all the missions in the Pimeria Alta region. This region was home to many different tribes but the main two were the Pima and the Papago or O’odham. San Xavier del Bac lies in a basin formed by two small hills in southern Arizona near present day Tucson. San Xavier is known not only for its beauty but as well as its fertile soils. Its location makes for harsh weather conditions though, from extremely hot to bitterly cold. If it weren’t for the cultural decline of the area the fields of the mission would have been entirely under cultivation. The Santa Cruz River also played a key part in the location of the mission. With the river running right by the mission, not but a mile to the east, this allowed for easy access to water, making it a desirable place to reside. The mission was also home to two different villages. These villages served mainly the Papago Indian tribe but was also home to a very small amount of the Pima tribe.

As you can see from this image, San Xavier del Bac is located just south of present day Tucson |
