Mission San Xavier Del Bac: Architecture and Design

Mission San Xavier del Bac is quiet a site of beauty. Dubbed the "White Dove of the Desert," Mission San Xavier del Bac is definitely worthy of its name. The outside walls of the mission has a white stucco/adobe like style and appearance made from brick and lime mortar that stands out in the sandy deserts of Arizona. Although the outside is a very simple design with the flashiest of the design coming from the beautiful mesquite doors, it still has a very classy and elegant taste to its architecture. The inside of the Missions church is where its true beauty shines. The walls of the sanctuary and side chapels are adorned with many oil paintings and full figured statues that often leave visitors awe struck when they first walk in. The inside is filled with murals known as frescos, carvings into the walls, and many statues of great leaders of their church. As seen through many of the paintngs, murals, and statues, one can see the architecture and design from both the New Spain era as well as art from the Native Americans. The New Spain art is a result of Spanish rule over the mission.
