Military Policy: Impact of Fort Bowie

Though there were several military camps located in pima county near present day Tucson the primary source of military strength in southern Arizona was Fort Bowie located in Cochise county. The road to this treaty discussed in McChristian’s book Fort Bowie when General Oliver O. Howard came to the region to begin a discussion for peace with the Apache,
"Howard secured a pledge from the Apaches that they would reside on the reservation and would forever cease warring against the Americans and the Mexicans, as well as their neighbors the Papago and Pima tribes."
. According to McChristians book general Howard was honest in his pursuit for peace. Bowie served as a major staging point for the U.S. army and its move west to California. The fort was an important location in the time of a treaty being struck with the Apaches in the region which ended the violent raids and facilitated the growth of the region’s population.
